To legally drive a car in almost any country in the world, you have to
pass a drivers education test, then an on-road test. Only after passing
these tests are you allowed to menace other drivers on the roads.
In many countries, to play golf, you need certification from a club
that you have passed the test on course etiquette, rules of golf and
demonstrated the ability to play the game to a level which won’t drive
other players berserk.
Last Tuesday’s Viet Nam News had an article on the poor turn out for
blood donation projects and I feel compelled to stick in my two-cents on
the issue.
Vietnam’s biggest Charity event, golf or otherwise, is the "Swing For
Life" golf tournament, which is held every year at VGCC on National Day
and raises over US$50,000 annually.
I mention it because the event was originally designed to help the HCM
City Red Cross purchase Bloodmobiles and other related equipment. As one
of the original organisers, albeit a small one, I take great pride in the
fact that the event made a positive contribution to the health and welfare
of people in the southern part of the country.
The fact of the matter is that giving blood is a responsibility that
everyone in Viet Nam shares equally. To not give blood puts the entire
system in danger and that can result in the loss of innocent lives…
It could even be someone close to you.
Accidents happen to everybody at one time or another. Idiots on the
highways thinking they’re Michael Schumacher, motorcyclists thinking
they’re in the X-Games on the streets, or even an accident around the home
can result in YOU needing to receive blood.
Hey, bust open a vein or artery and you can bleed to death in a matter
of minutes.
By donating blood, you are helping to ensure that there is an adequate
supply of blood available if, God forbid, YOU or your loved ones need it
someday. This is an issue in which being selfish means GIVING.
Therefore, if you’re a golfer, please do the responsible thing and give
blood. In fact, make it a foursome and drag three friends to the donation
centre with you.
The life you save could be your own.
