After months of thorough preparations, Huynh Van Son is poised to defend the National Golf Championship title in Da Lat, where he won the country’s debut top-flight domestic competition last year.
Son’s title defence is expected to be a tough task as he will compete against 80 top golfers including all his national teammates and emerging young talents like Nguyen Thai Duong and Tran Le Duy Nhat.

Well, its getting to that time again where I am required to make
my prediction on who will win the upcoming US Open golf tournament.
Due to my outstanding record of predicting winners, the
odds-makers in both Las Vegas and London have been waiting breathlessly for my
prediction. There's a very good reason for this…
I have never been right.

One of my pet projects is to get someone in Viet Nam to open a
daily fee public golf course where disadvantaged kids would have a safe place to
live and a place to learn a valuable skill. As more and more golf courses open
up in Viet Nam, trained equipment operators, groundskeepers, mechanics, F&B
and Pro Shop staff and caddies will be required… lots of them.

Michelle Wie is on track to make inroads on the men's turf once
again as she got through the local qualifier for the 2006 men's US Open by
shooting square par at Turtle Bay Resort in Hawaii.
Next in her sights is the Sectional Qualifying next month in New
Jersey. Should she make it all the way through, Wie would be going against the
best male amateur and professional players in the world on what is arguably one
of the toughest challenges in the game…Winged Foot.

Before we get into the meat of the column, the Gannon Vietnam
Open Championship normally scheduled for the first week in June has been moved
to 25-27 August for unspecified reasons. Personally, I think this might be a
good move as the weather might not be so devastatingly hot for us fat old white
guys at that time of year.
And with any luck, the Yuccas will have wilted from the summer
heat by then.

According to the recently
released book, My Life In And Out Of The Rough, John Daly claims to have lost
over US$55 million during 12 years of heavy casino gambling. This elevates him
up to the big league with Michael Jordan and Pete Rose in the "athletes
stupid enough to gamble" category.
