Did you know that most golf-related bets are settled in the Clubhouse
before you even strike your first shot?
It’s true.
In golf betting, whether it be for who buys the after-round beer or
even for high stakes, its how well you negotiate your stroke placements
with your opponents that often determines the outcome of the match.

Reporters are supposed to report the news, not make the news, yet
sometimes that is unavoidable…as I know from painful experience.
However, I am referring to the matter of Michelle Wie getting
disqualified in her first professional tournament due to the eagle eyes
of, believe it or not, a golf reporter who should’ve known better.

Welcome to the big leagues kid…
Michelle Wie thought she finished 4th in her first
professional debut, but sadly an eagle-eyed, big-mouthed spectator dropped
a dime a day late.

Tiger Woods was embarrassed about the way he won a tournament when John
Daly missed a three-footer in a play-off. He said golf tournaments
shouldn’t be won that way…
On one hand, I agree that it is heartbreaking to have four rounds of
competition decided by a single putt in a playoff, but on the other hand,
that’s what happens when TV is involved.

Michelle Wie is set to turn pro and collect a minimum of US$10 million
in endorsements on October 13th, which is the same day as my
daughter’s first birthday. I mention this because, as a parent, I am also
subject to that horrible "what if" question as well.

If this column seems a little disjointed and nonsensical, there’s a
very good reason for it…I’m so sick I can barely lift my head off the
pillow.
To me, there’s nothing worse than catching the summer flu or this
recent invasion of "sinusitis" which has been going around because your
mind says, "hey, nice day…go play golf" and your body replies "go to
hell".

Most people have trouble believing that golf courses can be anything
but tranquil and serene locations where a player is as safe as if they
were in their mother’s arms.
Unfortunately, there are dangers associated with golf, just as there
are with any other sport, especially ones where both temperatures and
tempers can rise to dangerous levels.

I arrived at VGCC for the charity golf tournament, excited to see what
Clair Bornthwaite,er…Blaine Cornthwaite…er, Zane Cornholio…er, whatever
his name is…did with the course and I gotta admit that the West Course
looked and played 1000 per cent better. Granted, I three-putted most of
the greens, but that was my fault, not Zane’s as I haven’t practiced in
quite a while.

Vietnam National Day always holds special significance for me as,
besides marking the date of Vietnam’s independence, it also means that it
is once again time for the granddaddy of all Vietnam’s charity
tournaments…Swing For Life.
It will also give me another chance to visit my old stomping grounds at
Vietnam Golf & CC in Thu Duc and catch up with some old friends.
