If this column seems a little disjointed and nonsensical, there’s a
very good reason for it…I’m so sick I can barely lift my head off the
pillow.
To me, there’s nothing worse than catching the summer flu or this
recent invasion of "sinusitis" which has been going around because your
mind says, "hey, nice day…go play golf" and your body replies "go to
hell".

Most people have trouble believing that golf courses can be anything
but tranquil and serene locations where a player is as safe as if they
were in their mother’s arms.
Unfortunately, there are dangers associated with golf, just as there
are with any other sport, especially ones where both temperatures and
tempers can rise to dangerous levels.

I arrived at VGCC for the charity golf tournament, excited to see what
Clair Bornthwaite,er…Blaine Cornthwaite…er, Zane Cornholio…er, whatever
his name is…did with the course and I gotta admit that the West Course
looked and played 1000 per cent better. Granted, I three-putted most of
the greens, but that was my fault, not Zane’s as I haven’t practiced in
quite a while.

Vietnam National Day always holds special significance for me as,
besides marking the date of Vietnam’s independence, it also means that it
is once again time for the granddaddy of all Vietnam’s charity
tournaments…Swing For Life.
It will also give me another chance to visit my old stomping grounds at
Vietnam Golf & CC in Thu Duc and catch up with some old friends.

Well, the biggest news in local golf was Kings Island Golf’s
announcement of their "Million Dollar Shoot-Out" on 26 – 30 October where
800 players from all over the world will compete for 200 Shoot-Out slots
and a chance to win US$1,000,000 in cash, as well as diamonds, automobiles
and a lot more.

Finally, home at last !
After 27 billion hours of flying across 8,000 time zones, I have
finally returned home to Vietnam. Man, it’s funny to think about it in
that way, but the truth of the matter is that I know more people here than
I do back in the US nowadays. Perhaps the old adage is true – "Home is
wherever you hang your hat."

As I sit here in the Business Class lounge of Asiana
Airlines waiting for my flight to Hanoi, I finally have some time to
relax. It’s been a hectic three weeks and I will probably need a holiday
to recover from my holiday.
On the last day of the trip, my wife relented and
agreed to let me play golf without pain of death upon my return. I guess
she was too tired to shop any longer...either that the numbers on my
credit card were worn off and thus, useless.

Well, two weeks have passed since I arrived in the USA and I still have
yet to step foot on a golf course so its no wonder I’m becoming grouchy.
Anytime a golf professional takes a holiday with his family, certain
sacrifices have to be made and careful negotiations are required. For
example, if I want to play golf one time, then I have to take the wife to
nine billion other places first, most of which involve shopping.

Hello from America…the Land of the Free and the Home of some of the
largest bottoms on the planet.
I honestly cannot understand how something like this can happen in
America, given the nation’s proclivity for producing TV shows where
everyone is svelte and where there are fitness centres on almost every
street corner.
Reality is a different story.

By the time you read this, my plane should be lightly touching down in
Boston as I being enjoying a long-overdue annual leave. This means I have
the opportunity to annoy all my old friends and family, become a menace on
the highways and, of course, drive local golf professionals up a wall.
